NUVIGIL is a once-daily medicine that could improve wakefulness if you have excessive sleepiness (ES) due to:12
- Shift work disorder (SWD)
- Treated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
- In patients with OSA, NUVIGIL is used along with other medical treatments for this sleep disorder. NUVIGIL is not a replacement for your current OSA treatment, and it is important that you continue to use this treatment as prescribed by your doctor
- Narcolepsy
You should be diagnosed with one of these sleep disorders before taking NUVIGIL. Talk to your doctor about excessive sleepiness.1
Wakefulness throughout the day or shift with NUVIGIL1
- NUVIGIL was studied in four 12-week clinical trials
- The clinical trials included more than 1100 people with these disorders
- Patients who took NUVIGIL experienced improvement in wakefulness
In 2 studies of patients with ES due to treated OSA and a study of patients with ES due to narcolepsy, NUVIGIL was tested using the Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), 4 times throughout the day. In these studies, the measures were taken between 9 AM and 3 AM.3
In a study of patients with ES due to SWD, NUVIGIL was tested using the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), 4 times throughout the patients’ night shift. In this study, the measures were taken between 2 AM and 8 AM.3
The MWT and MSLT are measures of a person’s degree of sleepiness.
NUVIGIL typically does not affect patients' ability to sleep when they need to sleep.1
Based on sleep studies that measure nighttime breathing and brain and muscle activity, NUVIGIL does NOT interfere with sleep.
- In these studies, most patients (95%) taking NUVIGIL did not report trouble sleeping. However, 5% of patients taking NUVIGIL reported trouble sleeping. 1% of patients taking a sugar pill (placebo) reported trouble sleeping
NUVIGIL has an established safety profile1
In clinical studies, most reported side effects were rated as mild to moderate.
- Common side effects of NUVIGIL were headache, nausea, dizziness, and trouble sleeping
- 7% of patients taking NUVIGIL stopped treatment due to side effects, compared to 4% of patients taking a sugar pill (placebo)
NUVIGIL may cause serious side effects including a serious rash or a serious allergic reaction that may affect parts of your body such as your liver or blood cells, and may result in hospitalization and be life-threatening. If you develop a skin rash, hives, sores in your mouth, blisters, swelling, peeling, or yellowing of the skin or eyes, trouble swallowing or breathing, dark urine, or fever, stop taking NUVIGIL and call your doctor right away or get emergency help.
NUVIGIL is not approved for children for any condition. It is not known if NUVIGIL is safe or if it works in children under the age of 17.
NUVIGIL is a federally controlled substance (C-IV) because it has the potential to be abused or lead to dependence. Please use NUVIGIL only as directed and keep in a safe place to prevent misuse and abuse.
NUVIGIL does not replace sleep and may not stop your ES completely. Only you and your doctor can decide if NUVIGIL is right for you, so make an appointment to see your doctor today.
