Prevalence and Impact of Shift Work Disorder (SWD)

SWD is recognized as a circadian rhythm sleep disorder in the DSM-IV-TR1-3*

  • SWD occurs when a patient's work schedule is out of sync with his or her internal sleep-wake cycle
  • SWD is not caused by sleep deprivation

Potential consequences of SWD1,2,6:

  • Sleepiness-related accidents
  • Missed family and social events
  • Trouble focusing
  • Reduced work performance
  • Increased irritability
  • Exacerbation of cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders
  • Impairment in important areas of functioning

NUVIGIL® (armodafinil) Tablets [C-IV] have not been demonstrated to affect any of these potential
consequences of SWD.

Patients should be cautioned about and, if appropriate, advised to avoid driving or other hazardous activities.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision. SWD does not occur as a result of another sleep disorder or mental disorder, or from the direct effect of a substance or general medical condition.1

Symptoms of SWD

The main symptoms of SWD are insomnia and excessive sleepiness (ES)2

Patients experience:

  • Insomnia when their schedule requires them to be asleep
  • ES when their schedule requires them to be awake
  • Or both

While NUVIGIL is indicated to improve wakefulness in patients with ES associated with SWD, it is not indicated to treat SWD itself or other associated symptoms, such as insomnia.

Role of ES in SWD

THE SLEEP-WAKE CYCLE7,8

In patients with SWD, treating insomnia does not necessarily resolve ES3

Hypnotics may promote daytime sleep among night shift workers...
but without consistent effects on objective measures of nighttime wakefulness.

– Adapted from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, SWD best practice guidance3

While NUVIGIL is indicated to improve wakefulness in patients with ES associated with SWD, it is not indicated to treat SWD itself or other associated symptoms, such as insomnia.
